Description:

The Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth College is dedicated to driving progress towards an affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy future for the betterment of society. The Institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Energy Transitions. The fellowship provides support for (i) collaborative research at the Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth and (ii) teaching a core course in Dartmouth’s new Master of Energy Transition degree program (offered through Dartmouth’s Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies).

Collaborative Research (50%): At the Irving Institute, the successful applicant engages in research aligned with the Institute’s mission to advance interdisciplinary solutions to energy and climate challenges. Potential focus areas include:

Technological innovation relevant to energy transitions

Impacts of energy transitions

Climate finance

Risk assessment and management

Market dynamics and policy incentives

Systems modeling

Teaching Master’s Level Energy System Modeling Course (50%): For the 9-month, professional Master of Energy Transition program, the successful applicant develops and delivers a course to train students in how to use, interpret, critique, and refine energy system models using concepts from engineering, natural and social sciences, and the liberal arts.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in translating research into action. The Fellow will be co-advised by Erin Mayfield, Hodgson Family Assistant Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Klaus Keller,(For more postdoctoral recruitment information, visit:boshihoujob.com) Hodgson Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College and Geoffrey Parker, Faculty Director of the Irving Institute. The Fellow will be hosted at the Irving Institute and have access to Dartmouth’s faculty, resources, and networks, allowing them to pursue novel research questions and contribute to the broader academic discourse on energy and climate.

This is a one- to two-year teaching and research position beginning between June 1 and September 1 2025. The Fellow will receive an annualized salary of up to $75,000 (paid in monthly installments) plus benefits, $5,000 annually to support computing, travel and research needs, and office space with access to other research needs or equipment.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Energy Systems, Environmental Science, Energy Policy, Energy Engineering, Environmental Economics, System Dynamics, or equivalent field and must have their degree in hand by June 30, 2025.

Desirable selection criteria include the following: (1) experience in the literature on energy systems, energy transitions, and/or systems modeling; (2) a commitment to excellence in university-level teaching; (3) excellent English verbal and written communication skills; and (4) strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in collaborative environments, including with stakeholders and other non-technical parties (e.g., representatives from industry and policy communities).
